Workshop 2: Circular Economy of Timber Buildings

The second workshop of the research community will be held on 27th October at Cardiff University.

The research team in collaboration with key stakeholders in South England and South Wales will develop further ideas and key topics highlighted from the outcomes of the first workshop.

Workshop 1: Circular Economy of Timber Buildings

The UK government has committed to increasing the use of timber in construction, having recognised its many benefits not least as a natural, renewable and low-carbon construction material. However, timber’s connection to the natural also brings unique challenges, particularly when faced with an increasing rapidly changing climate, an industrial transition towards net zero, and increasing demand across multiple sectors. These can only be tackled when stakeholders from timber’s diverse supply chains work together.

The first workshop of the research community will be held on 12th July at the University of Bristol. This one-day workshop will bring together experts in forestry, sustainable architecture, timber engineering, building physics, circular economy to explore the theme of a Circular Economy for Timber Buildings in a systems thinking approach.

This will include keynote talks from

– Confor (Andy Leitch -Deputy Chief Executive ) – ‘The UK timber resource and homegrown wood supply chain’

-Timber Development UK – ‘Home grown timber – from planting to post occupancy, some considerations’ (Tabitha Binding – Engagement Manager)

-Waugh Thistleton (Dave Lomax – Associate Director) –‘Circular Timber from Research to Practice – Systems design for demountability’

-Chalmers University (Robert Jockwer Assistant Professor in Timber Structures)- ‘Timber Buildings: Design for Adaptability’

-SevenOaks Modular Ltd (Charlotte Hale – Operations Director) – ‘Off-Site Manufacturing: Stop building, start manufacturing’

before pooling the diversity of knowledge and experience to identify unforeseen challenges and generate unique collaborative opportunities.
